Hello, students! My name is Al. I am an English teacher with 10 years of experience teaching English online. I grew up in Islington, a borough in the north of London. I love dogs, music, movies and casual sports. Traveling the world and meeting people from different walks of life is at the top of my bucket list. I like meeting people from all over the world and being able to hear about their lives. I am open-minded about the topics of my lessons, but rest assured that I will constantly correct you when you make mistakes during our conversation.
My teaching approach is the functional or communicative approach. I believe that to improve the speaking skills, a consistent practice in speaking and conversing is the most effective way. Apart from the usual Free talk, I have come up with lessons that have been quite effective and entertaining for students who are busy in their daily lives. Here are some of my most popular lessons:
Abstract Conversation
- In this lesson, the student will answer and discuss questions without definitive answers. The goal is to be able to control the flow of the conversation and minimize the translations that happen in your head.
Collaborative Conversation
- Although the class is one on one, the student will have to give his opinion on a certain topic that will be shared with other students. With this, students will agree or disagree, and the lesson cycle will help the topic grow as more students contribute and defend their opinions. Through this, the student will learn to adapt to the different interpretations given by other people on a given topic and will improve coherence. The objective of this lesson is to improve the student's ability to adapt to any situation, no matter who they are talking to, and to maintain a coherent conversation.
Exam Preparations:
My tutorials for exam preparations are based on materials and my overall knowledge of these exams. Homework is also an integral part in the lesson, especially for writing, listening, and reading exercises. For IELTS, I have my own materials that my previous students have proven effective.
In addition to these lessons, I am open to informal conversation practice and job interview exercises. I can also help you with your work presentations or homework, as long as they are related to English. Please feel free to book a trial class and get to know me. I look forward to meeting you!
With the functional or communicative approach, I prioritize interactive conversation to improve speaking skills.
For my beginner level students, your lessons will focus on pronunciation, vocabulary, and sentence building. As this class will be for your foundation in speaking English, I make sure that you start with the best practices and avoid developing bad habits. You will receive guided practice in constructing sentences, from simple sentences to complex sentences. Pictures and word translation will be part of the class because the goal of the class is to help you learn English in the most comfortable way.
For my intermediate level students, most of you are concerned about the lack of vocabulary and the ability to carry on a conversation in English in real life. Therefore, I make sure that the topics of conversation in our class are interactive, informative and relevant to real life situations. This is to help you build your confidence in case you need to speak to someone in English.
For my advanced students, most of you have English classes to maintain your level of English and improve your ability in case you haven't spoken English for quite some time. With that in mind, the classes for you are argumentative or opinion-based. Apart from the occasional exchange of ideas, I make sure that the classes are fun and curiosity-driven.
To my little English warriors, get ready for a fun-filled lesson that will have you on your feet! The priority is fun, and therefore we will have games and stories that will not only help you learn English, but will also keep you constantly interested and eager for the next class. Class exercises will include grammar, vocabulary, and story writing! I will also help discuss the English lessons you have at your school. Homework is optional!
