I am Russell, a British businessman with more than 40 years' experience in garment manufacturing. I started my first business in my early twenties and went on to manufacture and export clothing to the United States, Japan and Europe, working with retailers including Harrods, Saks Fifth Avenue and Isetan.
Japan has been an important part of my working life. It is a country I adore, and I have worked with Japanese companies for over 30 years. I have learnt that doing business internationally is about much more than simply speaking the same language.
Today I work part-time, advising founder-led businesses and mentoring young designers. What I have always enjoyed most is meeting people, exchanging ideas and talking about the everyday realities of business.
My Cafetalk sessions are for Japanese professionals who already speak English and would like to use it in real business conversation. Running my own companies has given me experience across almost every side of business, so we might talk about customers and suppliers, meetings and negotiations, management, production, cultural differences, current business issues, or simply something interesting that has happened during your working week.
This isn't a traditional English lesson. There are no textbooks or prepared exercises. Instead, we have a proper conversation about business. If there's a phrase that doesn't sound quite right, or there is a more natural way to express something, I'll tell you how a British businessman would actually say it.
I hope our conversations will be interesting, useful and enjoyable for both of us.
I look forward to meeting you.
