Hello, my name is Chiaki Ishikawa (石川千明). I was born in Japan and I am Japanese. At my workplace, I was touched by the kindness of the Brazilian people living in Japan.
“They look the same as all of us, they are friendly, kind-hearted and earnest, so why do they have to suffer so much?”
“Do Japanese people turn a blind eye to foreigners living in Japan?”
“Then let me be the first to reach out! Let me be the one to reach out to you!”
This is why I started learning Portuguese. I speak with native Portuguese speakers on a daily basis. With my teachers’ advice, I went to Sao Paulo, Brazil, to study the language. I am now studying medical interpreting.
One of my goals is to increase the number of people who are sympathetic. I believe that learning a language is also a way to approach others, and with more people able and willing to do so, the better the society will be.
