I majored in Japanese language education. Traveling abroad as a backpacker during university inspired me to live overseas and become a Japanese teacher.
I've taught Japanese in Japan, Brazil, Cambodia, China, and Malaysia. My learners have come from many backgrounds, including international and university students, business professionals, Japanese teachers, tour guides, stay-at-home parents, children with Japanese roots, and children learning Japanese as a second language.
I design lessons around each learner's needs and goals, with plenty of opportunities to speak Japanese.
Recently, I've been focusing on polite expressions and honorifics used in business. Japanese expressions change depending on the situation and the person you're speaking to. Learning them can help you build good relationships and understand Japanese culture.
I'm from the Kansai region (Osaka, Kyoto, and nearby areas), which is known for its distinctive dialect. Some polite expressions differ from standard Japanese, and exploring these differences is another fun part of learning Japanese!
I'm also interested in supporting children learning Japanese. Supporting a Cambodian child who transferred to an elementary school in Japan inspired me to obtain an elementary school teaching license. In graduate school, I researched children learning Japanese as a second language. I hope to support each child in a way that fits their background.
