「たくさん書く」より「よく見る」

書字能力は才能ではなく、手本を「見る力」から育ちます。
字を整えるために大切なのは、

ただひたすらに何枚も書くことではありません。

線の長さ、余白、文字の並び—
手本のどこに注目すると美しく整って見えるのか。

手本と自分の字の違いに気づけるようになると、
文字は整い始めます。

書道指導で私が大切にしているのは、
この「見る力」を育てることです。

"Write more" is not the answer. "See more clearly" is.

The ability to write beautifully is not a talent you're born with —
it grows from learning how to truly look at a model.

It's not about filling page after page.

Line length, spacing, the flow of characters on the page —
where you focus your attention makes all the difference.

Once you learn to notice the gap between the model and your own writing,
your characters begin to fall into place.

This is what I care about most in my teaching:
developing the ability to notice.

字を整える練習は、
集中力ややり抜く力を育てる練習でもあります。

Growing the Ability to Self-Correct

We all have blind spots in our own handwriting —
things we simply can't see without a fresh pair of eyes.

In my lessons, we look together:
what would make this feel more balanced?

Little by little, you start to notice things yourself.
And once you can see it, you can fix it.

 

That's the real goal.
And somewhere along the way,
your focus and persistence quietly level up too.

毛筆は、
筆圧・墨量など習得ポイントが多いため、
まずは硬筆で
文字の形や余白を観察する力を育てることを
おすすめしています。

この基礎があるお子さまは、
毛筆に入ってからの伸び方が大きく変わります。
毛筆の授業が始まる小学3年生まで、
1・2年生のうちから育てておきたい力です。

 

Brush calligraphy involves a lot of variables —
pressure, ink load, and more.

That's why I recommend starting with pencil:
learning to notice form and spacing first.

Children who develop this foundation
early take off remarkably fast once they pick up a brush.

 In Japan, brush calligraphy begins in Year 3.

The best time to build that foundation?
Years 1 and 2.

translating visual intuition into words anyone can understand.

Lessons

Calligraphy & Penmanship (Brush & Pencil Writing)

Lessons focus on hiragana, kanji, 

and developing well-balanced handwriting.

I also support school assignments, New Year calligraphy projects, 

handwriting exhibitions, and various calligraphy competitions. 

Many of my students have received awards 

and recognition for their work.

 

Japanese Language Arts

(Reading Aloud, Reading Comprehension & Kanji)

Through reading aloud practice, kanji study, 

and reading comprehension activities, 

I help children develop strong Japanese language skills.

"Could you listen to my child's reading aloud?"

"My child struggles with reading comprehension."

"I'd like my child to retain kanji more effectively."

These are all areas I am happy to support.

As a qualified school librarian, 

I place great importance on selecting materials that 

suit each child's needs.

In addition to stories and literature, 

I incorporate topics such as science, social studies, 

and moral education, choosing materials that 

match each student's interests and level of understanding.

My goal is to make learning both enjoyable and sustainable.

These lessons are especially popular with children living overseas, 
returnee students, and students attending international schools.

Lessons are tailored to each child's language background 

and learning experience, using carefully selected materials that support enjoyable and sustainable learning.

 

In addition to calligraphy and penmanship, 

students may also study English
(EIKEN preparation and grammar) with the same instructor.

By working with students across multiple subjects, 

I can better understand each child's learning style,
strengths, and pace, allowing me to provide
more personalized guidance.

With a background in educational psychology 

and subject-specific teaching methods, 

I carefully tailor lessons to meet each student's individual needs.

In Etegami lessons, we also enjoy exploring lettering styles 

and the creative use of colour.
