Hello! My name is Candice (or Nina) and I am a Japanese/English bilingual (and multicultural) tutor in English and Japanese. Both Japanese and English are my native languages, so I can adapt my lessons based on how confident you are in speaking Japanese.

【Brief personal history】
  • I grew up in Tokyo, and I also lived in Greater Vancouver for 15 years. After earning a Bachelor of Arts in Cognitive Systems from the University of British Columbia, and worked in academia and nonprofit organizations.
  • I received my Certified Professional Career Coach (CPCC) designation from the Professional Association of Resume Writers and Career Coaches in May 2023. In January 2024, I received my Certified Empowerment and Motivational Professional (CEMP) designation.
  • I enjoyed drawing pictures since I was little, and I continue to draw illustrations (like the lesson thumbnails).
【Teaching Style】
  • Since I have a background in coaching, I support students in achieving the goals they have set for themselves. Therefore, most of my lessons involve talking about a given subject rather than following a textbook. Sometimes I provide the topic, and sometimes the student provides the topic.
  • My students work in a variety of fields such as education, medicine, and art, so I strive to cater my lessons to match each student's context.
  • I studied linguistics while in university, and found the International phonetic alphabet extremely useful, so I use the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) chart in my pronunciation lessons.
  • If you are considering moving to/living in Japan, feel free to check out the "Moving to Japan Q&A" lesson. I moved back to Japan in the fall of 2023, so my knowledge is (fairly) recent.
I look forward to speaking with you! :D
