Beginners are more than welcome!
I offer casual lessons on traditional music, Japanese culture, and the Japanese language.
I work as a university lecturer in Japanese music history and ethnomusicology (I have over 20 years of teaching experience while bringing up my children). I majored in piano in college and musicology in graduate school.
◎ Fukumaru’s Philosophy: Making traditional music more accessible!
Beginners of Japanese music and those with no prior musical instrument experience are more than welcome to join!
When you hear the term “traditional music,” do you think, “That sounds difficult!“?
In my lessons, rather than focusing on playing Japanese instruments, we’ll learn about their history, musical characteristics, and features by studying from PDF materials and watching videos.
When my students listen to the songs from the videos, I often hear comments such as “It feels nostalgic” or “It’s so soothing” that reflect how the music helps them relax. When we talk about the instruments, you might discover similarities with instruments you already know or find new and intriguing things. Even if it’s hard to find information on your own, you can use the songs you’ve heard as a starting point to broaden your knowledge and interests.♪
I believe many people love music, so why not add a little traditional music to your musical interests? I’ll help you take that first step toward expanding your musical world.
No prior knowledge is necessary to take my lessons. Through these lessons, I’m sure that you’ll gain a deeper understanding of Japanese culture.♪

◎ About the Tutor
I majored in piano at a national university and went on to study musicology in graduate school. I am currently researching the history of koto music and work as a part-time lecturer in Japanese music history and ethnomusicology at a university in Tokyo. In recent years, I have also served as a temporary staff member at a local municipal museum.
Before I got married, my life revolved entirely around music, but after my children were born, my world expanded along with their interests. In addition to music, they’ve explored the worlds of ballet, sports, insects, and anime (such as Dragon Ball, Naruto, and Pokémon). As a parent, I’ve also gained a variety of experiences through my children’s extracurricular activities (ballet, piano, violin, swimming, gymnastics, abacus, cram school, online English conversation lessons, and more). Now that my children have finished taking their university entrance exams, I feel my parenting journey is coming to an end, or so I think…
