Idioms in English: why can't I remember them properly?

Teacher Dom

Forget about trying to memorise idioms!

It's a waste of your time. You'll never remember them properly and, since idioms have to be remembered exactly word for word without any changes, you will almost always make a mistake when trying to use them.

Therefore, learn a maximum of five idioms per week.

Then, write at least three sentences on paper using that idiom in a slightly different context.

Next, say out loud three different sentences using the idiom in a slightly different situation.

Practice this throughout the week.

During your next lesson with your Cafetalk tutor, try to introduce the idioms into the lesson wherever possible to practice. You will see the smile on your teacher’s face showing you that you've done an amazing thing.

When choosing your idioms, try to pick ones that will be useful to you.

For example, if you're studying for an exam, learn the following idiom:

I'm shaking in my boots

This means you're nervous or frightened

When doing an exam or test it's quite natural to say that you're a little nervous therefore this idiom will be useful.

Finally, use the idiom in your exam. You may even see a small smile on your examiners face :-)

Some other useful idioms below:

You're pulling my leg: you're joking with me

He's lost his marbles: he's crazy

Remember that, above all, it's more useful to be able to recognise and understand an idiom when you see it or hear it.

If you can use it in writing a speech you're doing an amazing job! You should feel very proud :-)
