Pancakes, Easter Eggs and Chocolate Rabbits

Weekly Topic: What do you look forward to this Spring?

Feb 22, 2023

Interesting ways to mark spring are customs. Today, 21 February, is Shrove Tuesday. In the past, people used to fast for Lent - they didn't eat rich food for religious reasons before Easter. So on Shrove Tuesday, the day before fasting, people would use up their rich food, including by making pancakes.
Nowadays, very few people indeed fast, but the tradition of making pancakes has remained. Many people in Britain make pancakes or buy them today! I made some today, and you can see them in the photo below.

Around six weeks later, we celebrate Easter. For most people, this is no longer religious. But people do give each other Easter eggs made from chocolate, and rabbit or chick shaped chocolates. Of course, you can buy them for yourself too. A few people also send Easter cards, with animals or spring flowers on them. On Easter Sunday, in Scotland, some families paint hard boiled eggs in bright colours and then roll them down a little hill!

Lambs are born in the spring too, and you can look out to spot your first lamb. If you are feeling active, you can also plant seeds for flowers and vegetables.
