Stories can be an excellent way to practice English and obtain a deeper understanding. Sometimes in the form of a short story an author will play with English. In the story ‘The Eyes Have It’ the author, Philip K. Dick, has fun with idioms.
The protagonist in the story is reading a simple book with ordinary English. The comedy is that the protagonist does not understand English as a normal person. A normal person would read ‘his eyes moved from person to person’ and know that means to look at each person for a second then look at the next person. The protagonist on the other had believes that someones eyes have left their head and started moving around a room like an alien.
Later the protagonist reads ‘Julia had given her heart to the young man.’ Normal people would know that means that she loves the young man. The protagonist comically panics and thinks that the girl is also an alien.
