Business English - how to talk about your job

Vicky B

"What do you do?"

This question means "What is your job?"

Have you ever had to explain your job to someone?

In this article I'm going to show how to explain your job using 4 quick and easy steps.

The 4 steps:
1. Job title

2. Department
3. What you do
4. Who you work with

Let's look at an example:

"I’m an administrative assistant.
I’m in the operations department.
My responsibilities are scheduling meetings, answering phone calls, and helping to organize company events.
I support all members of the operations department and I work closely with the marketing department too."

Let's look the phrases in the example:

1)
I’m a/an [your job title here].

2)
I’m in the [your department here] department.

You can also say: I’m in [your department here].
(without "the" or "department")

3)
My responsibilities are scheduling meetings, answering phone calls, and helping to organize company events.
As you can see, after "My responsibilities are..." the verbs all end in "ing".

4)
I support all members of the operations department and I work closely with the marketing department too.
"I support..." is used for coworkers who you help.
"I work closely with..." is used for coworkers who you work together with on tasks/projects.
