Is there a difference between hunting something and hunting for something? In fact, there is! A big difference!
If you are hunting something, you are trying to catch or kill it. Police hunt criminals, hunters hunt animals, gamers hunt monsters, and you might hunt a cockroach that poked its head out in your kitchen late at night!
If you are hunting for something, you are searching (thoroughly) for something you want to find. A person might huntfor a job, a new apartment, or a set of keys that are missing.
Hunt can also be used as a noun, and it occurs in some common collocations such as treasure hunt (a game or activity where players follow a series of clues, riddles, or directions to locate a hidden prize or object) and witch hunt (the searching out and deliberate persecution of individuals or groups based on unfounded accusations, often fueled by public hysteria).
Finally, a person who hunts is called a hunter, and this noun has some common collocations, too, such as bargain hunter (a shopper or investor who seeks out great deals), headhunter (a professional or agency hired by a company to find and hire highly qualified candidates), and big game hunter (a person who hunts large, wild animals for sport, trophies, meat, or valuable animal by-products).
