How Do Japanese People Use “Nanka”? | Real Japanese You Don’t Learn from Textbooks

Hi everyone! I’m Shoko!

If you’re learning Japanese, you’ve probably heard the word 「なんか」(nanka) many times.

For example:

なんか、疲れた。
Nanka, tsukareta.
“I’m kind of tired.”

なんか、それいいね。
Nanka, sore ii ne.
“That’s kind of nice.”

映画なんか見に行かない?
Eiga nanka mi ni ikanai?
“How about going to see a movie or something?”

Japanese people use なんか all the time in everyday conversation.

However, it can be a little confusing for Japanese learners because it can have different meanings depending on the context.

In this episode, I’ll introduce some of the ways Japanese people actually use なんか in everyday conversation.

There are several ways to use 「なんか」

In this episode, we’ll look at three common uses of なんか.

① “...and things like that”

なんか can be used to give an example, similar to 「など」(nado).

映画なんか見に行こうよ。
“Let’s go see a movie or something.”

② Showing that something is not important

なんか can also show the feeling that something is not a big deal or not very important.

It can also be used when talking about yourself in a humble way.

私なんかがやっていいのかな。
“I wonder if someone like me should really do this.”

③ “Somehow” / “kind of”

なんか is also commonly used when you have a feeling about something but can't clearly explain why.

この歌、なんかいいよね。
“There’s just something nice about this song, isn’t there?”

The meaning and feeling of なんか can change depending on the situation.

I’ll explain these different uses and nuances in more detail in the podcast, so make sure to give it a listen!

Use the Podcast to Practice Your Japanese!

You can use this episode not only to learn about なんか, but also to practice your Japanese listening and shadowing.

Step 1: Listen without looking at the script

First, try listening to the podcast without looking at the script.

Don’t worry if you can’t understand everything.

Just focus on listening to the sounds and getting used to natural Japanese.

Step 2: Listen again with the script

Next, listen again while reading the script.

Check any words or expressions that you didn’t understand the first time.

You may also notice that some words sound different when they are used in natural conversation.

Step 3: Try shadowing

Once you understand the content, try shadowing!

Shadowing is a practice method where you listen to someone speaking and repeat what they say a moment later.

It’s a great way to practice:

  • pronunciation

  • rhythm

  • intonation

  • speaking speed

You don’t have to be able to repeat everything perfectly at first.

Start with a short section and practice it several times.

Little by little, you’ll become more comfortable speaking along with natural Japanese.

Today, we looked at なんか, a very common word in everyday Japanese.

The word may be difficult to understand from a textbook alone because its meaning and nuance can change depending on the context.

But by listening to real Japanese conversations, you can gradually learn when Japanese people use なんか and what feeling it adds to a sentence.

So, after listening to this podcast, try practicing with this simple routine:

① Listen → ② Check the script → ③ Try shadowing

And next time you hear a Japanese person say なんか, try asking yourself:

“What does なんか mean here?”

This is a great way to start noticing the small expressions that make Japanese sound natural.

I hope this podcast helps you not only learn Japanese grammar, but also get used to the way Japanese is actually spoken in everyday life.

Enjoy the episode, and let’s learn real Japanese together!
