Skin being the largest organ in our body, deserves much of our attention. Our facial skin in particular is the source profit of many billion dollar companies all around the world. In this era of porcelain, glass-like skin, there is a subconscious pressure to look perfect all the time. Be it male or female, we have no choice but to give into that pressure most of the times. I want us to reflect on how much time and money we spend everyday trying to achieve absolute flawlessness. The myth of perfect skin remains unbusted and I, Jeru, have been falling for the same propaganda for a decade.
I recently came across this trend called 'caveman regimen' which means to stop using all skincare products except for water. Sounds a bit too much caveman right? This trend has been around for a while and it has a huge fan base as well as skeptics. I believe it gained popularity in the 2000s when a Japanese dermatologist Dr. Takashi Utsugi put forth the concept of 'Hada Danjiki'. It is based of the belief that modern skincare products mess with the skin's natural regulating system and hence needs a reset to let skin heal by itself. It does have its own advantages and disadvantages and can differ from person to person and skin to skin.
I have acne prone, sensitive skin so I was initially a skeptic. Then when I realised my skin did not progress much even after years of continuous dermatologist appointments, prescribed medication and expensive skincare, I decided to give skin fasting a chance. To my surprise, my skin reacted pleasantly to this change and so far it has saved me lots of money and time; perfecting my skincare routine. I still do not have flawless skin but I am sure that its slowly progressing. THANK GOD, because my skin is much healthier than it used to be. In a one-liner, I could say that my skin is not dependent on skincare products anymore.
It all sums to cutting down on products and going on skinimalism. You don't need extra products, you don't need that expensive cream to make your skin better. All you need is to stop surfing for the perfect product and start practicing minimalism in skincare. Your skin does not need a new routine, it just needs a reset. For one last time, LET YOUR SKIN BREATHE! Right now, I have only 2 products in my routine and honestly it has saved my wallet, my time and most importantly the my mental health. This regimen has made me actually listen to my skin's needs rather than blindly following trends.
A bit of a disclaimer, what works for me, may not work for you. But at the same time, it doesn't hurt to cut down on so many steps. Skincare should be selfcare. I repeat, SKINCARE SHOULD BE SELFCARE AND SHOULD DEFINITELY NOT CONSUME YOU. I rest my case here ;) If you enjoyed this article, I would love to discuss many such things about skincare with you. So let's connect!
