先週末は、犬の保護施設でのボランティアに参加してきました。フルタイムで働いていた頃は、このようなことをする時間などありませんでしたが、今では時間と機会さえあればするようにしています。今までに、昨年の熊本地震の募金活動を助けたり、ペナンのインドネシア領事館の女性のためのシェルターで英語のレッスンをしたりしてきました。

I did some volunteer work at a dog shelter last weekend. When I was working full time, I just didn't have time to do anything like this, but whenever I have time and the opportunity now, I try to offer myself. I was involved in raising money for Kumamoto Earthquake last year and also offering English lessons at a women's shelter at Indonesian Consulate in Penang. 

４PAWSというこの施設には600匹以上の犬が世話されています。多くの犬は捨てられたか、けがをしたかで、ペナンの道端で見つけられて連れてこられた犬たちです。イスラム教信者の間では犬は汚いとされているため、かなり厳しい生活を送ってきたのではないでしょうか。

4PAWS has over 600 dogs in their care. Many were found on the streets of Penang, abandoned or injured.  Among muslims, dogs have been seen impure, so they must have had really hard lives.

時には犬の間で喧嘩がありますが、驚くことに大抵の犬はおとなしくフレンドリーで、世話をしてもらうのを喜びます。私はその日10人ぐらいいたボランティアの一人でした。ボランティアの重要な仕事というのが、犬を1匹連れ出して、洗ってあげ、それから短い散歩に連れ出すことです。自分も濡れ、その濡れた犬の何とも言えない匂いがつきましたが、とても充実した経験となりました。

The dogs fight among themselves occasionally but surprisingly most dogs are gentle and friendly, and appreciate the attentions they receive. I was one of about 10 people working there on the day. The major jobs for volunteers to do are to get a dog at a time, wash it, and then take it for a short stroll. I got wet and smelly from the wet dogs, but it was a very fullfilling experience.

毛がフワフワのワンコちゃんを可愛がるのはとってもよかったです。私も犬を飼ってました。ジョージーは15歳でした。今でもいなくて寂しいって思います。

It was so nice to have a little cuddle time with fluffy friends. I used to have a dog. I miss her!
