ESL Mini-Lesson Plan: Visit to ABC Zoo

Objective:
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
1. Recognize and name common zoo animals
2. Use simple sentences to describe animals.
3. Answer basic questions about zoo animals
Lesson Breakdown (25 minutes)
1. Warm-up (5 minutes) – Animal Flashcards & Sounds
Show flashcards of zoo animals: lion, elephant, giraffe, monkey, zebra, bear.
Say the animal’s name and have students repeat after you.
Play an animal sound (e.g., a lion roaring) and ask, "What animal is this?"
💡 Questions to ask:
"What do you see?"
"What sound does it make?"
"Is it big or small?"
2. Vocabulary & Speaking Practice (10 minutes) – Zoo Visit Role-Play
✅ New Words: Lion, tiger, elephant, giraffe, monkey, zebra.
✅ Sentence Structures:
"This is a _."
"It is big/small."
"It can (jump/climb/swim)."
Activity: Role-Play "A Visit to ABC Zoo"
Pretend to visit the ABC Zoo. Act as the zoo guide and say, "Look! A lion!"
Students respond: "I see a lion! It is big!"
Ask, "What colour is it?" "What does it eat?"
💡 Variation: Give students stuffed animals or small pictures to “visit” the zoo and describe them.
3. Fun Activity (5 minutes) – Animal Movements Game
Call out an animal, and students move like it:
🦁 Lion – Walk strong.
🐵 Monkey – Jump and scratch.
🐘 Elephant – Stomp like a big elephant.
🦒 Giraffe – Stretch their necks high.
💡 Variation: Let students choose an animal and the class guesses by how they move.
4. Wrap-up & Review (5 minutes) – My Favourite Zoo Animal
Ask each student, "What is your favourite zoo animal?"
They answer: "My favourite animal is a _."
End with a quick review song (e.g., We’re Going to the Zoo).
