Simon says... let's practice English!
In this active and playful English class, we'll use the classic game Simon Says to practice listening to and understanding English while having fun!
I might say:
“Simon says touch your head!”
“Simon says clap your hands!”
“Simon says point to your shoulders!”
“Simon says jump three times!”
But listen carefully! If I don't say “Simon says...”, don't do it!
As we play, I can introduce and repeat English words and instructions based on your child's current English level. We might practice body parts, actions, directions, numbers, positions, and other useful vocabulary.
Repetition can happen naturally throughout the game. For example, your child might hear the word “shoulders” several times while following different instructions, giving them multiple opportunities to hear the word and connect it with the correct body part or action.
And Simon doesn't always have to be me! Students can also have opportunities to become Simon and give me instructions. This lets them switch from listening to English to using English themselves.
There are no worksheets or vocabulary lists to memorize. We'll learn and practice through listening, movement, repetition, communication, and lots of fun!
⊹ Learning through Simon Says ⊹
Simon Says can turn English instructions into actions! During our lesson, students can practice:
Listening comprehension - Listening carefully to English instructions and deciding how to respond.
Vocabulary - Hearing and practicing words involving body parts, movements, numbers, positions, directions, and actions.
Following directions - Understanding spoken English and using that information to perform an action.
Repetition - Hearing useful words and phrases multiple times naturally throughout the game.
Action words - Practicing verbs such as touch, point, clap, jump, turn, raise, sit, stand, and move.
Body vocabulary - Practicing words such as head, shoulders, hands, arms, knees, feet, and more.
Speaking & communication - Answering questions, talking with me between rounds, and communicating throughout the lesson.
Giving instructions - When the student becomes Simon, they can practice forming their own instructions in English.
Memory & attention - Remembering instructions and listening for whether or not “Simon says” was included.
Movement & active learning - Connecting spoken English with physical actions rather than only hearing or reading words.
Confidence using English - Practicing in a playful environment where mistakes are okay and part of the fun!
The goal isn't to sit still and study English. It's to hear it, understand it, respond to it, and eventually use it—all while playing!
⊹ What to Know before Class ⊹
- Students need a safe, open area where they can stand and move around while remaining visible on camera.
- Please remove objects from the student's space that could cause them to trip or get hurt while moving.
- All movements and activities will be kept age-appropriate and adaptable to the student's abilities.
- Students are required to have cameras on unless otherwise given permission not to.
- All students must have a guardian present for the first 5 minutes of the lesson in case of technical difficulties.
- Younger students may benefit from having a guardian nearby during the lesson.
