Academic Discussion Skills for University Students

Would you like to speak more confidently during university seminars, tutorials, presentations, and group discussions?

This five-lesson Academic English course will help you organise your thoughts, express your opinions clearly, support your ideas, respond to other students, and participate more naturally in university discussions.

The course is especially suitable for students who understand English but sometimes feel nervous, shy, or unsure about what to say during academic conversations.

You do not need to speak perfect English. My lessons provide a friendly and supportive environment where you can practise, make mistakes, receive helpful feedback, and gradually become a more confident academic speaker.

This course is suitable for you if:

  • You are currently studying at a university or preparing to begin university.
  • You find it difficult to speak during seminars or tutorials.
  • You need time to organise your ideas before answering.
  • You understand academic topics but cannot always explain your thoughts clearly.
  • You would like to improve your academic vocabulary.
  • You want to agree and disagree more politely.
  • You need to participate in group projects or presentations.
  • You feel nervous about making mistakes in front of other students.
  • You would like personalised Academic English practice.

This course is recommended for students at approximately B1, B2, or C1 level.

The vocabulary, discussion speed, and level of difficulty will be adjusted to suit you.

What will you learn?

During this course, you will learn how to:

  • Introduce an opinion clearly
  • Organise an academic response
  • Explain your reasons
  • Give relevant examples
  • Develop short answers into detailed responses
  • Agree and disagree politely
  • Respond to another speaker’s ideas
  • Ask thoughtful academic questions
  • Clarify unfamiliar ideas
  • Interrupt or enter a discussion politely
  • Summarise the main points of a conversation
  • Use academic linking expressions
  • Speak with greater fluency and confidence

The Five-Lesson Programme

Lesson 1: Expressing and Organising Your Opinion

Learn how to introduce an opinion and organise your answer clearly.

We will practise the following structure:

Opinion → Reason → Example → Conclusion

Useful expressions include:

  • In my opinion…
  • From my perspective…
  • I believe that…
  • The main reason is…
  • For example…
  • This is important because…
  • Overall, I would argue that…

You will complete a short discussion activity and receive personalised feedback.

Lesson 2: Developing and Supporting Your Ideas

Learn how to make your answers more detailed, logical, and convincing.

We will practise:

  • Adding explanations
  • Giving examples
  • Comparing different ideas
  • Describing causes and consequences
  • Supporting an opinion with evidence
  • Using academic linking expressions

Useful expressions include:

  • One possible explanation is…
  • A good example of this is…
  • This may be caused by…
  • As a result…
  • In contrast…
  • Another important consideration is…

Lesson 3: Agreeing and Disagreeing Politely

Learn how to respond to different opinions without sounding rude, too direct, or uncertain.

Useful expressions include:

  • I completely agree because…
  • That is an interesting point.
  • I agree to some extent, but…
  • I understand your perspective; however…
  • I am not entirely convinced that…
  • Another way of looking at this is…
  • I see what you mean, although…

You will practise responding to several different viewpoints during a guided academic discussion.

Lesson 4: Asking and Answering Academic Questions

Learn how to ask thoughtful questions and give clear, developed answers.

Useful questions include:

  • Could you explain what you mean by…?
  • What evidence supports this idea?
  • Could you give an example?
  • Why do you think this happens?
  • What might be the consequences?
  • How does this relate to…?
  • Are there any limitations to this argument?

We will also practise responding when you do not immediately know the answer.
