Are you preparing to travel, study, work, or spend time in a French-speaking country?
This lesson focuses on the French you are most likely to need in real situations — so you can feel better prepared when it’s time to actually use it.
YOUR GOAL COMES FIRST
Before we begin, tell me why you’re learning French and what situations you’re preparing for.
Are you planning a trip to France? Preparing for a semester abroad? Moving to a French-speaking country? Attending a professional event? Or simply hoping to feel more independent during your stay?
We’ll focus our lessons on the situations that are most relevant to you.
FOR TRAVEL
We can practice situations such as:
• Greeting people and introducing yourself
• Ordering at cafés and restaurants
• Shopping and asking about prices
• Hotels and accommodation
• Airports, trains and public transportation
• Asking for and understanding directions
• Making reservations
• Asking for help when something goes wrong
• Understanding common questions and responses
FOR STUDY OR A LONGER STAY
If you’re preparing to study or live in a French-speaking environment, we can also work on:
• Introducing yourself and talking about your background
• Everyday interactions at university
• Asking questions and requesting clarification
• Making appointments and handling practical situations
• Socializing and meeting new people
• Understanding common expressions you may hear in daily life
FOR PROFESSIONAL SITUATIONS
If your trip has a professional purpose, we can practice practical communication such as:
• Introducing yourself and your work
• Meeting colleagues or professional contacts
• Polite greetings and appropriate expressions
• Making simple requests and asking questions
• Small talk in a professional setting
Please note that this is a practical communication lesson rather than a specialized Business French course.
WE PRACTICE, NOT JUST MEMORIZE
Knowing a list of useful phrases is helpful, but real conversations don’t always follow a script.
That’s why we’ll use role-play and realistic situations whenever possible.
You might be the customer while I play the restaurant server, or you might practice arriving at a hotel, asking someone for directions, meeting a classmate, or introducing yourself at a professional event.
We’ll also work on understanding the kinds of answers you might receive. After all, knowing how to ask a question isn’t very useful if the response leaves you completely lost!
CULTURE AND COMMUNICATION
Language isn’t only about vocabulary.
When useful, I’ll also explain cultural and communication differences — for example, levels of politeness, greetings, using “tu” and “vous,” or what sounds natural in a particular situation.
Whether you’re preparing for a holiday, a new academic experience, or time abroad for work, we’ll focus on helping you use French with greater independence and confidence.
