Are you planning a trip to Morocco, interested in Moroccan culture, or looking for a way to communicate more naturally with Moroccan people?
Welcome to Darija — the Arabic you’ll hear in everyday life in Morocco.
WHAT IS DARIJA?
Darija (الدارجة المغربية) is Moroccan Arabic, the variety of Arabic used in everyday communication in Morocco.
If you’ve studied Modern Standard Arabic, you may be surprised by how different everyday conversations in Morocco can sound. Darija has its own vocabulary, expressions and pronunciation, with influences from Amazigh languages, French, Spanish and other languages throughout Morocco’s history.
In this lesson, the focus is on the language people actually use to communicate in everyday Moroccan life.
WHO IS THIS LESSON FOR?
This lesson is for you if:
• You’re starting Moroccan Arabic from zero
• You’re planning to visit or spend time in Morocco
• You have Moroccan friends, a partner or family members you’d like to communicate with
• You’re interested in Moroccan culture and everyday life
• You already know some Darija and want more speaking practice
• You’ve studied Modern Standard Arabic and want to understand how people communicate in Morocco
WHAT CAN WE LEARN?
For beginners, we can start with:
• Greetings and introductions
• Essential everyday vocabulary
• Moroccan pronunciation
• Numbers and useful expressions
• Asking and answering simple questions
• Ordering food and shopping
• Transportation and asking for directions
• Building your first conversations
If you already speak some Darija, we can work on:
• Real conversation practice
• Expanding your vocabulary
• Understanding natural Moroccan speech
• Common expressions and idioms
• Pronunciation
• Correcting recurring mistakes
• Becoming more comfortable expressing yourself spontaneously
MORE THAN A PHRASEBOOK
Knowing how to say a few sentences is useful, but real conversations don’t follow a script.
We’ll practice through conversation, examples and realistic situations so that you can understand not only what to say, but also what someone might say back to you.
Depending on your goals, we can practice situations such as visiting a café, shopping in a souk, taking a taxi, meeting someone’s family, talking with friends or simply having an everyday conversation.
LANGUAGE AND CULTURE TOGETHER
Darija is closely connected to Moroccan everyday life and culture.
When relevant, I can also explain the cultural context behind expressions, greetings, politeness and ways of communicating, so that you’re not only memorizing words but understanding how they’re actually used.
ABOUT YOUR TEACHER
I’m Moroccan, and Darija is the language of my everyday life and culture.
Growing up in Morocco also meant living in a multilingual environment, so I can help you understand connections and differences between Darija, Modern Standard Arabic and French when useful.
Whether you’re preparing for your first trip to Morocco, learning for someone important in your life, or simply curious about the language and culture, I’ll adapt the lessons to your level and goals.
