Let's talk food (and table manners)

Learn about common English phrases. Listen to an interesting Podcast and see if you can find the answers. We also look at table manners! (Intermediate level)

課程介紹


1.     Lead in, conversational: What is your favourite food? What is the main difference between Japanese food and English food? What do you enjoy ordering at an English restaurant? Teacher asks student what they like to have for breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner? Teacher explains the difference between the four meals. Teacher explains that supper is a meal eaten in the evening and dinner is a main meal usually eaten in the evening or in the afternoon. Supper is also referred to as ‘tea’ in the UK. (Don’t say no to a tea offer late afternoon, you’ll go to bed hungry!)

 

2.      Introduction: Teacher asks student if they have ever heard of Dynamo the magician? She presents the student with a podcast from Ed Gamble and James Acaster. Encouraging student to listen. She explains that ‘Off the Menu’ with Ed Gamble and James Acaster is a podcast where different guests are invited to talk about their ultimate dream meal. 3.      Listening for gist: 2.14: Who made his favourite dish for him and can he make it himself? His grandma and no he can’t make it himself. When he walked down the side of the LA Times building, what was he afraid of? Heights.

 

4.      Listening for detail: 9.55- How does Dynamo take his tea? What disease does Dynamo suffer from? What does he say he can’t have because of his disease?  What food did he mention that he can eat? When was he diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease? 22.03 – What is Dynamo good at making in the kitchen?  What dish does his grandma make that he loves? What does she make the corned beef hash in? 

 

5.      Focus on language: Teacher tells student to focus on some expressions used in the podcast and ask them what they think the expressions mean. Explains to student what it means: Creature of habit. Foodie. Bring you’re A game. Stuck in their ways. Like magic. Washing up. 

 

6.      Comprehension: Watch a YouTube video on afternoon tea manners: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKA7b7Zxi7A ask the student to listen and write down what tips they pick up from the video. Give student 3 minutes to watch and jot down some tips they picked up. Stop student after the 3 minutes to see what they picked up on. Discuss the tips in the video. Teacher covers some vocabulary words like serviette and scones and reviews pronunciation.

 

7.      Feedback: Teacher discusses errors she picked up on during the lesson. Asks the student what they liked about the lesson and what they didn’t like about the lesson
