Talking About Vacations
Topic: Vacations & Travel
Focus: Speaking, conversation, and past/present/future tenses
Level: Beginner–Intermediate
Lesson Objective
I will use the topic of vacations to help students practice talking about past experiences, current preferences, and future plans. I will also encourage students to explain what they enjoyed and why, and express excitement about future vacations.
1. Warm-Up – 5 minutes
I will start with simple questions about vacations:
- Do you like vacations?
- Where do you usually go?
- Beach or mountains?
- Summer or winter vacation?
I will introduce the three time periods: last vacation → first vacation → next vacation.
2. Last Vacation – 10 minutes
I will ask, “When was your last vacation?” and use follow-up questions about where they went, who they went with, what they did, and how long they stayed.
I will introduce and reinforce past-tense phrases such as:
“I went…”, “I visited…”, “I stayed…”, “I saw…”, “I ate…”
3. Favourite Part & Enjoyment – 10 minutes
I will ask:
- What was your favourite part?
- What did you enjoy?
- Why did you enjoy it?
I will encourage students to expand their answers using:
“I enjoyed ___ because ___.”
“My favourite part was ___ because ___.”
4. First Vacation – 8 minutes
I will ask students about their first memorable vacation and encourage them to describe where they went, who they were with, and what they remember.
This section will provide additional practice with the past tense and simple storytelling.
5. Next Vacation – 10 minutes
I will introduce future-focused questions:
“When is your next vacation?”
Students will practice:
“I am going to…” / “I will…” / “I'm planning to…” / “I want to…”
I will ask where they are going, what they plan to do, and what they are most excited about.
6. Speaking Challenge – 5 minutes
I will ask students to tell me:
- Something they enjoyed.
- Something they remember.
- Something they are excited about.
I will encourage them to use different tenses naturally while speaking.
7. Review – 2 minutes
I will finish by reviewing the three time periods:
Last vacation → Past
Current preferences → Present
Next vacation → Future
I will finish with a few quick questions to check understanding and give the student an opportunity to demonstrate what they have learned
