The News, the Science, and Movies

2020年5月11日

Good morning Cafetalk Guests! I hope this sunny and hot May is treating you well.

We see in the news that the COVID nr-s are going down fast in Japan, however at the same time they are on the rise again in South-Korea, China and Germany. What's your take on this turn of events? How should countries deal with the economic outfall of the pandemic? Should society opt for larger economic changes, especially ones that can mitigate global warming? Should we look for solutions that result in a more egalitarian spread of income and property? What are your thoughts? Let me know!

At the same time, AIs and the internet is developing without any disruptions. Since so many of jobs and tasks will be done by machines in the next 20-40 years, without harming productivity, should we just opt for a society that spends more time on caring, rather than simple production tasks? More and more people - including politicians and economists - support the idea of a universal basic income. With the automatization of several simple administrative and management tasks a lot of people will lose their job. This would be a good way to redistribute the increased profits of companies deploying AI and firing human employees, and do something good for society by giving people the chance to use their time, energy and talent for good.

During the pandemic several theatre companies, movies, operas, and streaming companies made their programmes available for free or for less. Have you seen any good movies recently? Let's chat about nice entertainment and the wonderful world of art, still available to us during these strange times.
