Hello, everyone! I'm so thrilled and honored to be here, in Cafetalk. You can call me Shuni. I'm teaching English and Indonesian. I was born in Indonesia into an English speaking family. That's how I come to have 2 native languages. My parents and grandparents were teachers. So I guess, a teacher's blood runs through my veins. As a matter of fact, many have commented that my way of teaching makes it easier to understand. I myself always feel a deep sense of satisfaction when I witness my students put what they have learnt from me into practice.
EDUCATION
I first learnt Japanese from a local Japanese course in my neighborhood. To this day I'm truly grateful for my first tutor there. I wouldn't have been who I am today if it weren't for her. She made me fall in love with Japanese (and finally Japan as a country) despite the fact that I had signed up merely because the first 2 weeks was free.
Although I'm native in 2 languages, I understand very well what it is like to learn a second language. Hence, when you become my student, I will teach you from a foreigner's perspective, from your perspective. I want to make you fall in love with English or Indonesian language just like my first Japanese teacher did with me.
Two years after graduating with a bachelor's degree in Japanese Language & Literature in Bandung, Indonesia, I got a scholarship from The Japan Foundation for a Long Term Training Program for Foreign Teachers of the Japanese Language in Urawa, Japan. Here's where I topped up my teaching talent with professional teaching skills.
For teaching English, I have obtained TEFL certification.
TEACHING EXPERIENCES
I started teaching English and Japanese at private homes and public evening courses when I was still a college student. That's when I came to realize that teaching a native language can be more challenging than teaching a second language. When a student asked me about expressions or grammar usage, I could give more detailed explanation for Japanese language, but failed to do the same for English language. I became aware that there were few things in English which I had taken for granted. I had never thought like e.g. "Why use this word instead of this?" The only way I could explain an error was: "That just doesn't sound right to me."
Approximately 4 years later, I was offered to give private Indonesian lessons to a young Chinese lady who was married to an Indonesian. They spoke Chinese with each other. But, the husband had a business and wanted to run it together with his wife. Once again, I was faced with the same challenge, and even tougher, because Indonesian language at that time, in the late 1990s, wasn't familiar yet with spoken language. Our spoken language was actually our ethnic language, or Indonesian of an ethnic dialect version. That, varied (and still varies) widely from West to East. I can actually give a lecture on this topic. Long story short, I successfully made this young lady confused because much of what I taught her was correct grammatical Indonesian whilist her employees, like 99% of Indonesians, neglected grammar unless in a formal situation.
I ransacked the university's library where I worked, for books on English and Indonesian grammar. Through page after page, I felt compelled to answer the 'why's of my students.
Yes, my first formal job was as a Japanese Language Lecturer at a university in Bandung, Indonesia. For the love of language, and teaching, I seized the opportunity to learn about teaching English -- as a second language -- from my English lecturer colleagues. I was occasionally invited to events conducted by the English Department.
OTHER WORKING EXPERIENCE
5 years later, due to a change in circumstance, I moved to Jakarta and started a second formal job which lasted for 23 years: A Japanese - English - Indonesian interpreter & translator at a Japanese motorcycle manufacturing company. I became accustomed to the Japanese working mindset. But the most important thing is that's where I learned the usage of language in business terms. I wasn't teaching the language. I was using the language. Now I can assure you that, I'm teaching you what I have learned, and used, myself.
How Can I Help
※ My lessons are for English lessons and Indonesian lessons. I will deliver my lessons either in English, or Indonesian, or Japanese, as per request. You don't have to stick with the same introductory language each time you take a lesson with me. For example: Today you learn English conversation with me and require the lesson to be delivered in Japanese. Next day, you book another English conversation class with me, but this time you want me to deliver the lesson in English. That's totally fine.

I can help you with writing manuals, operation standards, emails, presentations, etc. - Would you like to learn how to express your ideas or thoughts in written words? Do you wish to begin from the simplest form e.g. a to-do-list, a diary entry, etc.? Let me be at your service.
- CONVERSATION
I can help you with how to deliver a presentation, proposal, speech, etc. so that your English or Indonesian would sound as natural as possible. - Would you like to have someone you can practise your English or Indonesian with? I'll be there for you. And because I'm your teacher, I would give you feedbacks so that you can improve. That's what I'm paid for, isn't it?
- We can practise through a discussion on a topic of your choice, or we can do a role-play, or you can tell me about something you like and see if I can understand what you are trying to say.
- TRANSLATION
As you might have noticed, being fluent in a certain language is one thing, being able to translate the language into another language, is another thing. I have a long experience with this. Let me be your guide on how to translate in such a way that the result would appear natural, just as if it was the original version. - EXERCISE
I know you have already heard it a hundred times: "Practice makes perfect." I'd say, "For an ultimate perfection, you must have fun." I myself already experienced so much fun creating language exercise modules using Kahoot as the platform. My students have commented that it was fun and at the same time a great help for their improvement. This kind of exercise would enable you to drill over and over for a certain period of time i.e. one week. You don't need to download the app if you wish not to. You can practise using your smartphone or desktop. You can practise while standing in a queue, or while sitting in the bus, or while drinking a cup of coffee, etc., etc.
