I am often asked, "why is your name
Jack Detroit"? That is a great question. I have lived in Japan, China, and Taiwan
for over 20 years. I have traveled all over Europe, the United Kingdom, North America...and beyond! BUT before I traveled, I was born and raised in
America.
When I was born, my parents left me in front of a
Detroit Tigers (MLB team) gift shop. When the staff came to open the store in the morning they found a tiny but beautiful baby with perfect English. Since I didn't have a name, the store clerks called me Jack-'
Jack' is a common name if you are too lazy to create a good name for a baby. I grew up too fast for them! They needed help!
A local
auto mechanic (or car repair garage) helped when he wasn't busy fixing powerful, reliable American cars like
Fords and
Cadillacs. When I was a young boy, I got into a lot of trouble. But I often visited the
Motown museum near
Cass Corridor and
the DIA (Detroit Institute of Arts).
But in all that time, I didn't have a last name! When it was time to graduate high school, I realized I
needed to have a last name or I couldn't get
a job! Or buy
a plane ticket! Or
travel the world! So I chose the name of my childhood home,
Detroit! Now you know why my name is
Jack Detroit.
I made up this story. But if you want to know more about
Detroit, one of the most interesting cities in America, please ask me! I know a lot about it. It's in my name!
