I'm from the USA, but my New Year's tradition is making Osechi!

Weekly Topic: Things you always do on New Year's Days

Jan 15, 2021

Hi everyone!  I'm Pearl, from Iowa in the USA.  I've lived in Japan for 14 years, and I love to cook, especially Japanese food!  My family loves the New Year's food "osechi" especially, so every year I like to make many different dishes.  Then we usually invite the neighbors or other family and friends over and eat it together.

Here is my osechi from 2019:

Here is ozoni!  I especially like the mitsuba in the soup, because we rarely eat it any other time, and it really reminds me of New Year's.

Here is the food on special dishes.  How does it look?  I especially like salmon roe in the yuzu skin!

This year, because of the pandemic, I chose to order osechi online and to only cook a few dishes myself.  But this was a special experience too!  I ordered a very nice osechi from Kyoto, and there were so many dishes inside that I could never make myself!  We enjoyed the food with sake.

Did you enjoy osechi too?  I also like to cook many other countries' foods such as Thailand or Korean, and American food too!  Espcially I like baked recipes from the US, such as casseroles, cookies, and tarts.

Have you ever made any American recipes?  What kind of food do you like to eat?

Recently I have a lot of chances to cook food at home now, so I am trying out many new receipes.  It's a lot of fun!  Have you tried any new recipes recently too?  I'd love to hear about it!

See you!

Pearl A.
