Do you want to read a book about a Doppelganger together?

2021年3月22日

Hello Cafetalk Community!

How are you doing? I hope you and your family are doing well!

Today, I wanted to know if you would be interested in a reading lesson. The book I selected for my lesson is a Grade 3 Level book specially written for ESL (English as a second language) learners. This book is an engaging read and sure to be a "page-turner." If you like mysteries, suspense, and thrillers, this is the book for you.

[English expression: "page-turner"]
1. an engrossing book or story

[Title: "How I Met Myself"]

The award-winning book is about a man meeting his Doppelganger. If you already know what a Doppelganger is, don't you think it's a mysterious and creepy idea? I don't know if it's true or not, but I believe there might be a person (or two) out there that looks like me. Maybe. . . It would be even creepier to meet someone that looks just like me face-to-face.
[*Summary on Amazon:]

Award-winning original fiction for learners of English. At seven levels, from Starter to Advanced, this impressive selection of carefully graded readers offers exciting reading for every student's capabilities. One icy winter's evening in Budapest, John Taylor is on his way home from the office when a man runs into him and knocks him over. The man turns to say sorry and John is amazed at what he sees: the man is John's double. The double rushes away but leaves no footprints in the snow. Over the next year, it becomes clear to John that the meeting was no accident and that his double has a very important message to give him. Paperback-only version. Also available with Audio CDs including complete text recordings from the book.

Also, the following is a synopsis about the origin of Doppelgangers. If you're so inclined, please read the summary below:

[Doppelganger:]

A doppelganger can be the ghost of a living person or any other sort of physical double that looks very similar to the ghosts of the deceased. The word doppelganger comes from the German Doppelgaenger, literally meaning “double-goer.”

In some cases, a person will come upon his own doppelganger who is typically engaged in some future activity. Scientists at the University Hospital in Geneva, Switzerland discovered that electrical stimulation of the brain, used to treat epilepsy, can produce the sensation of a doppelganger’s presence in the patient.

In folklore, the doppelganger is said to have no shadow or reflection, much like vampires in some traditions. Seeing one’s own doppelganger or the doppelganger of a friend or relative is considered very bad luck, often indicating death or serious illness.

[Lesson Agenda:]

Due to the fact that every student reads English at various speeds and paces, it is difficult to tell exactly how many lessons it would take to read this book. As a result, I suggest you take as many 30-minute lessons as necessary to finish the book. That way, you can proceed at your own time, schedule, and pace.

[Book: Number of Pages] 64
pages
As an example, if you read 8 pages in a 30-minute lesson, you only have to take 8 lessons. It is entirely up to your own reading speed and pace. I decided not to make it a Value-Package because people read at such different speeds.

You don't have to prepare or read anything before the lesson. All reading, questions, and discussions will be held during the lesson. Just come to the lesson ready to have a pleasant time reading an exciting book!
