Quante lingue si parlano davvero in Italia? How many languages are really spoken in italy?

Vale

Usually, when I show this map to my students, they get scared.

"What dialects are, Valentina??" they ask, because they think Italian as a uniform, standardized language... the truth is quite different.

Because of its turbulent past of invasions and "fractionated" territories, Italy has an extraordinary linguistic heritage: its dialects.

The dialect is a language with its own grammar and vocabulary, it comes from Latin, but is not written or used in official documents. It is just spoken by a high percentage of Italians in familiar situations, such as between family and friends. Consider that there are elderly people, expecially in some regions like Veneto, Campania and Sicily, that just speak dialect!

If you go to Italy without knowing that, you could be stunned by hearing some language you did not study... don't worry, it is almost sure is the local dialect!
