World Heritage Campaign: Pompeii

Apr 22, 2022

Pompeii was an ancient city located in what is now the commune of Pompeii near Naples in the Campania region. Pompeii was buried under 4 to 6 metres of volcanic ash and toxic gas in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79.

The city remained under the ash, frozen at the moment it was buried. The petrified inhabitants appear as statues, their faces carved in stone. However, they were real people. It is still possible to see them in the ruins.

Among all, the most important building in Pompeii is La Villa dei Misteri, which means ‘the Villa of the Mysteries’, it is a huge building that takes its name from the splendid frescoes in the triclinium, the paintings represent the initiation rites called 'mysteries' of the cult of Dionysus.
