To Boldly Go Where No Man Has Gone Before!

Weekly Topic: A TV show you watch right now

Laurin N.

A TV Show I watch right now is Star Trek. It is my favourite science fiction show.

Star Trek is an American science fiction TV Series created by Gene Roddenberry in 1960s and it quickly became a worldwide pop-culture phenomenon. It is still ongoing today and it is available on the Netflix online streaming platform.

Star Trek has become famous for its compelling, futuristic storylines, its interesting, well-written characters, and most importantly, for the socio-cultural themes the series has always addressed in its narrative. Indeed, Star Trek talks about racism, discrimination, injustice, civil rights and many other important causes.

It doesn’t give concrete solutions to these problems, but it explores every point of view and aspect of such human issues, which are not even so far from reality. Simply, Star Trek talks about the human race, its values, contradictions and ideas using fantastic and surreal metaphors –since it is still a science fiction show-. It is more than an ordinary science fiction show. That’s why I love this show so much. There’s always more under the surface. Several meanings, perspectives and ideas to discover.

Then we realise that the issues of the human race are always the same. Same old story. Despite the society is evolving day by day, the human being has still a lot to learn and there are still many social battles to fight and rights to gain.

In Star Trek, the human society is tolerant, equal and just, very different from the capitalistic society in which we live. I don’t know if the human race will ever reach that kind of awareness, Star Trek is only a show, while reality tells us otherwise. The human society is still far from an absolute state of awareness. The human being is just a baby who’s still learning how to crawl.

Star Trek gave me a lot: ideas, emotions, perspectives and it expanded my imagination. It is more than a show to me. It is a discovery, a therapy. It is a trek beyond the human mind.

Are you a Trekkie too?

Do you like Star Trek? Would you like to talk about it? Then book my lesson and we'll talk about any Series you'd like to share.
