In this brief follow-up to Part 1, I will introduce just a few more words for talking about fire in English.
Other words associated with fires
Fire and blaze are also nouns. A blaze is a large, fierce fire. Fires that occur in nature are called wildfires, forest fires, or brush fires.
A fire consists of flames and produces smoke and ash. A smoldering fire may consist of cinders, embers, or coals (partially burned matter that is still hot and could reignite a fire).
When something is burning, you can say that it is on fire, in flames, aflame, or ablaze.
Ex. Much of the province is still on fire as we speak.
Ex. When I turned around, the stove was in flames.
Things that can burn easily are called combustible, flammable, or (strangely) inflammable. In this odd case, the in- prefix does not make the word negative!
Ex. Keep all flammable materials away from open flames.
Well, I think that’s enough for now! Whether you’re discussing wildfires or woodstoves, I hope these words help you to talk about fire in English.
