今日は、英語の言語学の角度からなぜ英語の発音が難しいかちょっと説明します。
1. Different muscles of the mouth are used for English and Japanese 英語と日本語の発音する時に使う口の筋肉は違う ??
Eg: “v” sounds are often translated to ベ, like elevator = エレベーター.
When pronouncing “v” in English, we cannot use the same mouth muscles as べ.
例：英語の『V』の発音はよくカタカナの『べ』に翻訳されます。
例えば elevator -> エレベーター
でも英語の『V』を発音する時、『べ』で使う口の筋肉では発音できません。
2. Different tongue positions 英語と日本語を発音する時舌の位置は違う ??
Eg: l and r in English are often mixed up because the tongue positions don’t exist in Japanese.
例：英語のLとRの舌の位置は日本語に存在しないですから、よく混同されます。
3. English words are sometimes not pronounced the way they are spelt 時々英語の発音はスペルと違う ??️
This is because modern English was influenced by Latin, German, French and Dutch words, so the pronunciation of the same letter is not always the same.
現代英語は昔のラテン語、ドイツ語、フランス語とオランダ語に影響を受けましたから、同じ綴りでも発音がいつも同じとは限りません。
例：時々『o』は『e』みたいで発音します。
例えば、『work』は『werk』で発音します。
強い『O』として発音したら、『walk』みたいな発音になっちゃって意味は変わります。
Work = 働く
Walk = 歩く
4. Word stress 単語内の音の強弱 ⚖️
All English words with 2 or more syllables have some form of stress. Sometimes, the meaning of words change if the stress changes. It’s important to learn about word stress so that you can sound more native.
２音節以上の単語は音の強弱があります。時々意味はどこで強くいうかによって変わります。だからネイティブの発音をできるように、単語内の音の強弱を学ばなければいけません。
例：
PREsent （名詞）= 贈り物／今のところ
preSENT （動詞）= 提示する
These are the reasons why I don’t recommend Japanese people to learn English pronunciation using direct katakana translations. Tomorrow, I’ll share more on how you can overcome all these 4 difficulties. Thanks for reading!
