Today is May 5, a national holiday in Japan called Children's Day.

今日は「子どもの日」に　かぶるもの・飾（かざ）るものを　紹介（しょうかい）します。
I would like to introduce some things to wear or display on Children's Day.

それは、兜（かぶと）と五月人形（ごがつにんぎょう）です。

They are the traditional samurai helmet（kabuto）and Japanese warrior dolls（May dolls）.

こどもの日には、兜　や　五月人形のような　伝統的（でんとうてき）なものを　飾ります。
On Children's Day, traditional items such as helmets and May dolls are displayed.

兜を　飾るのは、武家（ぶけ）の　風習（ふうしゅう）が　始まりです。
五月人形は　鎧　や　日本刀を　纏（まと）った　日本の　侍（さむらい）の　人形（にんぎょう）です。
武士（ぶし）たちが　戦（たたか）いの　前に　身の　安全を　祈願（きがん）して、
鎧　や　兜を　神社に　奉納（ほうのう）していたそうです。
そこから、子どもを　病気（びょうき）　や　怪我（けが）、事故（じこ）などから　守ってほしいとの　願いを　込めて、鎧兜が　飾られるように　なりました。

The custom of displaying kabuto originated with the samurai families.

Gogatsu-ningyo are dolls of Japanese samurai wearing armor and Japanese swords.

Samurai warriors used to dedicate their armor and kabuto to shrines to pray for their own safety before battle.

The armor and kabuto were displayed in the hope that they would protect children from illness, injury, and accidents.

鎧　や　兜は、身を　守るための　お守りとして　飾られたのです。
Armor and kabuto were displayed as amulets for protection.

当時（とうじ）は　男の子が　病気　や　事故などの　災厄（さいやく）を　逃（のが）れ、
力強（ちからづよ）く　成長（せいちょう）しますように、と　願いを　込（こ）めて　始まった　風習。
今では　男の子に　限（かぎ）らず、みんなが　すくすくと　成長しますように、との
願いが　込められています。

In those days, it was a custom to wish for a boy to grow up strong and healthy, and to avoid illness and accidents,

Nowadays, it is not only for boys, but is also a wish for everyone to grow up healthy.

今日は　いろんなところで　鯉（こい）のぼり・ちまき・柏餅（かしわもち）・兜・五月人形などが
見られるでしょう♪
Today, you will see carp streamers, Chimaki, Kashiwamochi, Kabuto, and May dolls in many places.

今日は　良い　お天気なので、
鯉のぼりにとって　泳（およ）ぎやすい日に　なりそうです。
It looks like it will be a good day for carp streamers to swim as it is supposed to be sunny today.
