What Makes a Good CV? Your Key to Landing the Job

Meneesha

As I navigate my job search, I’ve been reflecting on what it takes to stand out in a competitive market. One thing is clear: a strong CV is essential. It’s not just a summary of my past roles - it’s a strategic tool to showcase my skills, achievements, and potential. Here’s how I’m crafting a CV that gets noticed:

Start Strong

I begin my CV with a concise personal statement tailored to the role I’m applying for. In just 3-4 lines, I highlight my key skills, experience, and career goals. This quick snapshot grabs attention and shows why I’m the perfect fit.

Focus on Achievements

Employers want to see the impact I’ve made. Instead of listing responsibilities, I highlight measurable achievements. For example, “Increased sales by 20%” demonstrates my ability to deliver results.

Tailor It to the Job

A generic CV won’t cut it. I carefully analyse the job description and customise my CV to match the skills and requirements. Using keywords from the job ad helps me pass Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) and catch the recruiter’s eye.

Keep It Clear and Concise

Recruiters spend just seconds scanning each CV, so I make mine easy to read. I use bullet points, action verbs, and short sentences. A clean, professional layout with consistent formatting ensures my CV is visually appealing and easy to navigate.

Highlight Relevant Skills

I include both hard skills (like technical expertise) and soft skills (such as communication and teamwork). Tailoring this section to the job ensures my most relevant abilities stand out.

Remember the Basics

I ensure my contact details are up to date and professional. I’ve added my LinkedIn profile and website, and listed my work experience and education in reverse chronological order. If relevant, I also include certifications or awards that strengthen my case.

Proofread and Polish

Typos and errors can ruin even the best CV. I proofread carefully and, if possible, ask someone else to review it for feedback. A polished, error-free CV reflects my professionalism and attention to detail.

Conclusion

In today’s competitive job market, a good CV is my ticket to an interview. By focusing on achievements, tailoring it to the role, and presenting it clearly, I’m confident I can make a lasting impression and take the first step toward landing my dream job.
