Why My First Lesson Didn’t Go as Planned (and What I Learned)

İrem Altan

Today, I gave my first lesson on Cafetalk. Unfortunately, it didn’t go as well as I had hoped. I couldn’t fully dedicate myself to the lesson or to my valuable student. To be honest, I was feeling unwell, tired, and low in energy that day. This is not an excuse, but I wanted to be open about it. My shortcomings mainly came from being unprepared, being new to this work, and still not being fully familiar with the platform.

Even so, the lady I taught was very kind and listened to me patiently. That’s why I feel both disappointed in and upset with myself. In Turkish, there is a saying: “The first attempt has no sin.” However, I still feel uncomfortable about having responded in this way to a student’s time, effort, and enthusiasm.

I have learned a lot from this first experience. I hope that my second lesson will be better planned, more reliable, and much more productive for my student.
