Discovering Kyoto

Kirk

A favorite quote of mine says "a writer is the only one who gets to relive the experience twice."

As a writer who has spent the past five years traveling and living in five different countries, I would say this is true.  I have relived my travel adventures many times.

Since I am a new tutor to Cafetalk, I though that sharing about some of my travels would be a great way to introduce myself so you can get to know me better.

My adventures first began in China seven years ago, but it was destiny that led me to Japan.  When I first arrived in Kyoto many years ago, it felt more familiar to me than my own home, even though I didn't speak a word of Japanese.  Something led me to Japan.

Three years later, I moved to Japan and lived in a tiny machiya in Kyoto near the Imperial Gardens.
That was the most sigificant year of my life.  I studied shodo, chado, zazen and sumi-e painting.  That year I walked over 500 miles along the streets of Kyoto.

Although I had to leave Japan due to the start of Covid-19, I had the opportunity to begin teaching English to Japanese businesspeople for three years.   I formed many great relationships with my students.  During those years I have lived on a beach in Costa Rica during the rainy season, a mountaintop in Panama surrounded by indeginous people and now where I live in Peru in South America.

I have written almost 200 articles about my life and travels.   I hope you enjoy this article which was for a travel magazine.  It is about the things I loved most about Kyoto.  It will always be my favorite place in the world.

I look forward to meeting you soon and talking about your daily life in Japan and helping you to become confident and fluent in speaking English.

See you soon!
