Why I Chose to Teach Turkish as a Teacher Who Loves Japanese Culture

İrem Altan

Hello! My name is İrem.
Since I was little, I’ve always been curious about different cultures and passionate about learning new languages. Among them, Japanese culture has always held a special place in my heart — from traditional arts and anime to food and the beauty of everyday life. Japan inspires me with its calmness, discipline, and unique sense of harmony.

But one day, I realized something important: I also come from a culture that is just as rich and meaningful — Turkish culture.
Our long coffee talks, our warm hospitality, the expressions and idioms that reflect our emotions... These were things I took for granted, but when I looked at them from an outsider’s perspective, I saw how special they truly are.

That’s when I thought:
“I love Japanese culture, but sharing my own language and culture can be just as beautiful.”

For me, teaching Turkish isn’t just about teaching grammar or vocabulary. It’s about sharing a world — a way of seeing life.
When a student learns to say “Teşekkür ederim” (Thank you) for the first time, or when they respond correctly to “Nasılsın?” (How are you?), I can see the pride and joy in their eyes. Those are the sweetest moments of teaching.

In my lessons, I always try to create a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Making mistakes is completely okay — that’s how real learning happens. Sometimes we take a short coffee break, sometimes we talk about life in Turkey, and other times we chat about Japan. Because I truly believe that learning a language means more than memorizing words — it means getting to know people.

Being here on Cafetalk and connecting with students from all over the world is such a joy for me.
If you’d like to learn Turkish, you won’t just be learning a language — you’ll also be discovering a warm and welcoming culture.
