Weekly Topic: What my students taught me this year

Allen A.

It had been some time since I last taught English on another platform, where I once had a student who booked my classes regularly. In our very first conversation lesson, we connected over a shared interest in Marvel films.

Growing up, I watched almost all of the available Marvel movies, starting from the first Iron Manfilm starring Robert Downey Jr. Watching these movies together became our family bonding time during the peak of the Marvel franchise, and I truly enjoyed the experience. But over time, I began to feel that the quality of the movies, the storytelling, and the overall direction of the Marvel franchise started to decli

ne. That was when I gradually lost interest in Marvel movies and TV shows.

During our conversation lesson, my student asked, “Who’s your favorite Marvel character?” I answered, “Probably Spider-Man or Thor, because of his recent movie.” At that time, I had just watched Thor: Ragnarok, though I was already a few years behind on the newer Marvel films. But honestly, I didn’t really care anymore because of the disappointing movies and controversies surrounding the franchise. That’s when my student said, “Oh nice! Have you watched the Loki series? He’s my favorite. My favorite character is Loki.” His enthusiasm made me curious. Loki had always been a decent character, and since Ragnarok was the most recent movie I had watched, I had to admit that Loki was slowly growing on me because of his role in that film.

In the final minutes of the lesson, my student strongly encouraged me to watch the series—and to catch up to Endgame first before starting Loki’s show. Just seconds before disconnecting from the online classroom, he sent this message in the chatbox:
“Most purpose is more burden than glory — Loki.”

That line struck me deeply because it related to what I was going through at the time. So I decided to watch the series. I really enjoyed it; my student was spot on with his rating. I would also give it a 9/10, if not higher, because it gave Loki the greatest character development he has ever had in the Marvel franchise. When the scene came where that line was spoken, I thought to myself, “Hey! That’s the line! That’s what my student sent me in the chatbox!” Then the scene continued, and the next lines hit me even harder.

They resonated deeply with the situation I was in back then—and honestly, they still do to this day. It went like this:

This has touched my heart that I was greatful that someone has recommended me this show and sparked my love for Marvel movies again. After a few days, my student booked a lesson again with me and we caught up to one another, for the whole conversation lesson, we only talked about the Loki TV series and we were having fun discussing many things about it.

I am greatful to have met people like him, and there are more students of mine who have recommended great thigns to me as well and I have been close with many of them.

If you have any good recommendation of shows, anime, movies, music or even games, I would love to hear them while I also help you practice your English conversation skills.

Book a lesson and let's have a chat!
