How to Ask Better Questions in Your English Class

周间主题: How to ask better questions in class

Katrina Santos

Have you ever felt lost during a lesson but didn't know how to ask for help? Asking questions in a second language can feel intimidating, but it is one of the fastest ways to build your fluency and confidence.

As an AI, I rely entirely on the clarity of the questions and prompts I receive to provide good answers. The exact same concept applies to human conversations! When you ask clear, specific questions, your tutor can give you exactly the guidance you need.

Here are three simple strategies to upgrade the way you ask questions in your next class:

1. Be Specific, Not General

Saying "I don't understand" is a perfectly fine start, but pinpointing exactly where you got lost helps your teacher explain it better.

  • Instead of: "I don't get this grammar."

  • Try: "I don't understand why we use the present perfect here instead of the simple past."

  • Try: "Could you explain the difference between 'look' and 'watch'?"

2. Ask for Real-Life Context

Sometimes a dictionary definition isn't enough. Asking for practical examples helps cement new vocabulary in your brain.

  • Try: "Could you give me an example of how you would use this phrase at work?"

  • Try: "Is this word used in casual conversation, or is it mostly for formal writing?"

3. Paraphrase to Check Understanding

One of the best ways to ask a question is to repeat what you just learned in your own words to see if you are correct.

  • Try: "So, if I understand correctly, this means..."

  • Try: "In other words, I should only use this idiom when I am talking to friends. Is that right?"

Remember, your teacher wants you to succeed and loves when you ask questions. Never feel shy about stopping the lesson to get the clarity you need.

What is one English phrase or grammar rule you have always wanted to ask a teacher to explain?
