Something I Learned During the Summer: Progress Is Not Always Visible

Weekly Topic: Something I learned during the summer

Assal

This summer taught me something that I often tell my English students: progress is not always easy to see.

When we are learning something new, we often expect improvement to be obvious. We want to learn new vocabulary and immediately remember it. We want to study grammar and immediately use it perfectly. We want to practise speaking and suddenly become fluent.

But real learning usually doesn't happen that way.

Sometimes, progress is quiet.

As a teacher, I have seen many students feel frustrated because they think they are not improving. They may say, “I still make mistakes,” or “I know the words, but I forget them when I speak.”

However, making mistakes does not mean that you are not making progress.

During the summer, I was reminded that learning is often happening even when we cannot clearly see the results. Sometimes, we need time to process what we have learned. Sometimes, we need to make the same mistake several times before we finally understand it. And sometimes, we only realize how much we have improved when we look back.

I think this is especially true when learning a language.

One day, you may struggle to answer a simple question. A few weeks later, you may find yourself having a conversation without thinking too much about every word. You may not even notice the change because it happened slowly.

So, one important thing I learned this summer is this:

Don't judge your progress only by today's performance.

Instead, think about where you were a few months ago.

Can you understand more English now?
Can you express your ideas more easily?
Do you know words and expressions that were completely new to you before?
Are you becoming more comfortable with making mistakes?

If the answer to even one of these questions is yes, then you are moving forward.

Learning is not always fast, and it is not always visible. But small steps still take us somewhere.

As we move into a new season, I hope we can all remember to be a little more patient with ourselves, and to appreciate the progress we have already made.

What is something you learned during the summer?
