(2) The Chainsmokers - Selfie

May 5, 2014

それで、会話の最後に適当に「But first, let me take a selfie.」

One of my favorite songs right now is "Selfie" by the Chainsmokers, though I'm not sure if it can be really considered to be a "song" because all the lyrics are spoken, not sung, which leads me to another question: Should I call those spoken words "lyrics" since they are not sung? For now, let's just call this a song for convenience's sake. I'll discuss this further later on.

So, what's interesting about this "song" is that this female person just rambles on and on and then ends the first verse with "But first, let me take a selfie." That's kinda funny. And that's why randomly adding "But first, let me take a selfie" at the end of a conversation has become such a fad lately in America. What? No? It hasn't? Then, let's start it here on Cafetalk! So, why don't you try it, too?

Anyway, speaking of "selfie," I recently changed my profile picture. Some of you might remember the old picture in which I was wearing a suit and a big smile. That picture wasn't a selfie. That was a candid photo snapped by a co-worker while I was talking to another co-worker. Anyway, since basically I don't intend to wear a suit during my Skype lessons, the Cafetalk tutor advisor suggested to me that a more casual photo would be better. So, I took four selfies with my webcam and asked my girlfriend to pick the one that she thought was the best. She chose one (= the one on my profile now) all right but said, "Smile!" suggesting I retake my selfie because (she thought) I didn't smile in any of those four selfies. But I'm terrible at intentionally making a smiley face for picture taking. That's so awkward! In my further defense, if you take a really good hard look at the picture, I believe you will notice a very slight smile on my face, which was the biggest smile I could manage. So, all these excuses later, she finally gave me the go-ahead with the current picture. (In case you prefer me to wear a suit, that can be arranged. Just say so when you request my lesson.)

OK, now back to the discussion about the definition of the word "song"! But first, let me take a selfie.
