(9) Ariana Grande - Problem

Jun 25, 2014 | 7 Commento

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXUSaVw3Mvk

(7) Rixton - Me And My Broken Heart」で話しました。

Shortly after I posted my previous blog entry (8) Rascal Flatts - Rewind, I spotted a typo in the Japanese-written section. I had mistakenly written みんさん instead of the correct みなさん in the last paragraph. That was so embarrassing. Since Cafetalk allows you to edit your article after it's posted, I could have just fixed the typo. But I didn't because I was so lazy that I chose an easier way. Fast-Forward

What I did wrong was simple: I accidentally skipped the middle "a" when typing m-i-n-a-s-a-n, which resulted in "minsan." I think this kind of error is pretty common. I also think this kind of thing can happen naturally, pretty often, even in spoken language. Take ~んです(-ndesu) for example. It's a result of "o" dropped from ~のです(-nodesu). Probably, ~さん(-san) is also a contraction of ~様(さま/-sama), evolving from -sama into -sam, eventually into -san. So, once a majority of people start saying it, it becomes acceptable. That's what I'm hoping for with みんさん. It's so much easier than correcting the typo. I would appreciate it if you could start saying "みんさん" and spreading it around. Hopefully, some day in the future, the general public won't see that typo as a problem anymore.

Thus, the song "Problem" for this week. This song is American singer Ariana Grande's latest single, which features this year's hottest new female rapper Iggy Azalea, and the whispering voice of Big Sean. The song is about a girl who's in a relationship where she doesn't love her guy anymore but still wants him and can't break up with him. But she knows deep down that she'd be better off if she left him, which is expressed in the lyrics as "one less problem without you." A clever expression, isn't it? I guess most of you might have been harboring similar sentiments towards me. If that's the case with you, please write "one less problem without you" in the comment section below. If you don't want your Cafetalk name known, no problem. Please just add "anonymous" at the end. I believe that, that way, no one can find out who wrote it.

Anyway, I have three problems with this song and Ariana Grande. Let me explain:

1) English grammar: "One less problem" should be "one fewer problem" because we're talking about something countable here. Although none of you may remember, I think I first pointed out this problem a few years ago in my blog 洋楽ブログ(-237) Justin Bieber - One Less Lonely Girl. Here's the video link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXUSaVw3Mvk

2) Lack of originality: What makes Justin Bieber Justin Bieber? He's Canadian! That's so unique. What makes Avril Lavigne different from others? She's Canadian! That makes her stand out. Then, what does Ariana Grande have or do that could be her trademark? Ability to hit the extremely high notes? That's Mariah Carey. Always faces the camera at a certain angle to make the best headshots? That's Mariah, too. I talked about this type of problem in 洋楽ブログ(7) Rixton - Me And My Broken Heart. Instead of trying to be Mariah, I want her to be a Britney wannabe.

3) Poor articulation: Ariana doesn't sing the words clearly. For example, beginning at 0:30 in the video, she sounds like she is singing, "Head in the clouds / Got no weight on my shoulders," but the actual lyrics are "Nya nya-nya nya / Nya-nya nya nya-nya nya nya." Please articulate! Iggy's rapping is clearer.

Anyway, I guess everyone has some kind of problems. If you have any problems understanding English, you can ask me up to five questions through After the lesson, you'll have as many as five fewer problems. This lesson is available with or without Skyping. If you have any questions about this lesson, you can just message me.

OK, that's it for today! Thank you for reading! Also, special thanks to those who "Liked" my previous post! By the way, I'm sorry that the Fast-Forward button doesn't work. That button has a coding problem. To be honest with you, I wanted to make it double as the Like button so that the Like counter would go up if you clicked Fast-Forward, but my HTML and Java skills weren't good enough. I was hoping to find out how many people would click Fast-Forward. I wanted that number for research purposes. So, I hate to trouble you, but if you actually clicked Fast-Forward, could you please be honest about it and click "Like" now? I believe none of my readers has an honesty problem.
