Confident Communicators

Develop your ideas, express your opinions, and communicate with confidence

Recommended Level & Learners

Target: High-school-age learners, university students, adults, and advanced younger students
Recommended level: Approximately EIKEN Pre-1 / CEFR B2/C1 or equivalent

This course was originally designed for advanced high-school-aged students, but is also suitable for university students and adults who want challenging discussion practice without the complexity of the topics used in my Advanced Discussion course.

Develop Your Ideas

Students develop advanced vocabulary, critical-thinking skills, discussion strategies, and the ability to speak at length about a variety of interesting topics.

Lessons focus not only on expressing an opinion, but also on explaining why, giving examples, considering other viewpoints, and responding naturally to another person's ideas.

What We May Do

  • discuss and debate age-appropriate topics
  • compare different viewpoints
  • support opinions with reasons and examples
  • respond to questions and counterarguments
  • solve problems and make group decisions
  • create proposals and give presentations
  • summarize and reformulate ideas
  • practice natural discussion strategies and expressions

Preparation & Homework

Students will normally receive vocabulary study or other preparation before the lesson so that more class time can be spent actively using English. Completing the homework before each lesson is mandatory.

Students should come prepared to share detailed opinions, ask and answer follow-up questions, and participate actively throughout the lesson.

A Bridge to Advanced Discussion

This course is slightly more accessible than my Advanced Discussion course. Discussion topics are selected with high-school and university-aged learners in mind and generally require less specialized knowledge or life experience.

For adults, it can also serve as a stepping stone toward more demanding advanced discussion and problem-solving lessons.

For learners who are ready to move beyond everyday conversation and express more detailed, thoughtful ideas in English.
