Understand and Use Common Spoken Expressions
Descrizioni
If you have been studying English for a while, you have probably learned hundreds of the verbs commonly encountered in newspapers, textbooks, and formal English. However, when watching TV, talking to native speakers, and listening to songs, you have perhaps been surprised to find that concise, sophisticated words like "deplete" and "omit" are often replaced in conversation by phrases like "run out of" and "get rid of"; sometimes, English probably sounds to you like a language with a very small numer of verbs--"get", "go", "stand", "take", etc.--combined in nearly endless ways with prepositions--"in", "on", "out", "of", "over", etc.
This lesson is for you if you have ever wondered about the differences between things like "standing up to" and "standing up for", wanted to learn and practice natural and common ways of expressing ideas in conversational English, or struggled with the seemingly countless number of phrasal verbs native speakers use.
The first session will include a review of some special properties of prepositions in English, tips for categorizing and study phrasal verbs, and practice using context to infer the meanings of these expressions. Additional sessions provide opportunities to practice using the expressions in conversation and receive feedback on sample sentences you write using the phrasal verbs studied.
I will provide reference and practice materials.
