The lesson begins with the explicit teaching of individual letter sounds and letter names through a structured and engaging phonics approach. Children are introduced to new sounds using visual prompts, actions, songs, and repetition to support memory and pronunciation. Previously taught sounds are regularly revisited to reinforce learning and build confidence.
A variety of interactive games and practical activities are used throughout the lesson to maintain engagement and deepen understanding. These include matching games, flashcards, oral blending activities, sound hunts, and partner work to encourage active participation and repetition.
Once children are confident with individual sounds, they are guided to blend sounds together to read simple CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words such as “cat,” “dog,” and “sit.” Blending and segmenting activities are repeated several times using different strategies to develop fluency and automatic recall.
Children then apply their phonics knowledge by reading simple sentences containing familiar words and sounds. The teacher models accurate reading and supports comprehension through questioning and discussion.
The final part of the lesson focuses on early writing skills. Children use their phonics knowledge to write simple sentences independently, applying correct letter formation, spacing, and simple punctuation where appropriate.
The overall aim of the phonics programme is to ensure that children develop secure knowledge of letter sounds, including digraphs and trigraphs, build a growing bank of vocabulary, and progressively develop the confidence and skills needed to read and write simple sentences independently.
