Descrizioni
Hello! My name is Lalita and today I will start with the first lesson on Buddhism,a Spiritual practice. And in this our first discussion will be on " The Birth and Early life of Buddha"
While we are all familiar with the term " Buddhism",I would reflect on this word in short. We will consider Buddhism not as a religion, but a way of life,a spiritual path,a philosophy. Why Buddhism is a Philosophy and not a religion will be discussed in details in the lessons series. This first topic on the Birth and Early life of the Buddha is a foundation for our further knowledge and discussion of the great founder of Buddhism.
Siddhartha Gautama who later became the Buddha, was born around 563 BC in Lumbini, the present day Nepal. It is said that his mother named Yashodhara while on her way from the palace of Kapilvastu to her father's place, delivered the baby boy. After birth the baby laughed and walked 7 steps with the lotus blossoming at every step.
His father King Shuddhodhan was a leader of a large clan called the shakya or Sakya. Some say that he was a hereditary King and some say that he was a tribal chief.Siddharthas mother was Mayadevi who belonged to another clan called as Koliyan. In short Siddharth was a son of Royal Parents of Shakya clan.
Siddharthas mother had a sister called Gautami, who Shuddhodhan married after Queen Mayadevi died shortly after the birth of Siddharth.Gautami became the first Buddhist nun and raised Siddharth as her own child.Prince Siddhartha and his family were of Kshatriya caste of warriors and nobles.Among Siddhartha's well known relative was Ananda his cousin,or the son of his father's brother.Ananda later became the Buddhas disciple and Personal attendant
.In the above picture you can see Queen Mayadevi holding Siddharth,( at the bottom), Siddharth walking seven steps( in the middle) and Asita Muni ( at the top) making some predictions.
So who was Asita Muni? He was one of the holy ascetic or a Saint during those times who was invited to the Palace of Kapilvastu to make some predictions about the newborn baby.Asita muni told King Shuddhodhana that the baby seemed to be blessed with some supernatural powers.Either he will become a great King of his times or renounce the worldly life and become a holy saint. This baffled King Shuddhodhana. While the joyous celebration was on in the Kapilvastu palace,he was also upset overt he one thing of his son leaving the palace to follow a holy life. The King thought," What if this really happens"?.So he decided to take adequate measures to protect Siddhartha
The boy was raised in great luxury and shielded from the sights of human suffering.
At the age of 16 he was married to Princess Yashodhara who was also 16.At that time it was customary for the marriages to be arranged by the families.
Yashodhara was the daughter of the Koliyan chief and her mother was a sister to King Shuddhodhana.
The marriage continued happily for sometime and Prince Siddhartha was blessed with a son called " Rahula".
While in the Palace it is said that Siddhartha was very kind at heart,a humble person, which is depicted in his story of how he saved the bird called Rajhansa .This will be discussed in the next chapter
So students this was the end of today's session on the Birth of the Buddha and a part of his Early life.
I hope it was a great and a simple way to know the beginning of this great person," Lord Buddha".By now you must be really curious to know what happens in the next part and why did the Buddha renounce the worldly life.So let's get ready for the next chapter and I hope you will also have some questions.
