At the end of this lesson, the student will be able to:
1. Identify and name common items found in a restaurant such as eating utensils, menu, waiter, plate.
2. Differentiate between breakfast, lunch and dinner, including typaical foods eaten at each meal.
3. Understand the difference between a starter, main course, and dessert on a menu.
4. Make use of polite expressions for ordering food (eg. I'd like... / Can I please have...)
LEVEL: INTERMEDIATE
TIME: 30 MINUTES
1. Warm-up (5 minutes)
- Teacher asks:
“What is the name of your favourite restaurant?”
“What’s your favorite meal?"
“What is your favourite meal of the day: breakfast, lunch, or dinner?” - Quick pair/share discussion to activate vocabulary.
2. Vocabulary: Items in a Restaurant (5 minutes)
Objective: Students identify and use common restaurant items.
- Show pictures of: fork, knife, spoon, plate, glass, serviette, menu, waiter, waitress, bill, table, chair.
- Quick matching activity: match word → picture
- “What do you use to eat soup?” → Spoon
- “Who brings the food to the table?” → Waitress
3. Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner (5 minutes)
Objective: Understand differences between meals.
- Breakfast: morning meal (examples: eggs, toast, coffee).
“What is a basic breakfast meal where you live?” - Lunch: midday meal (examples: sandwiches, salad, pasta).
“What is a traditional everyday lunch meal where you live?” - Dinner/Supper: evening meal (examples: steak, rice, fish, soup).
“What is a popular dinner meal where you live?”
- Breakfast: morning meal (examples: eggs, toast, coffee).
- Quick activity: Teacher says a food, students says which meal it usually belongs to.
- Omelette → Breakfast
- Sandwich → Lunch
- Roast chicken → Dinner
4. Courses in a Meal (5 minutes)
- Starter (appetizer): soup, salad, bread.
- Main course: steak, pasta, fish, rice.
- Dessert: cake, ice cream, waffle, fruit.
- Show menu examples with pictures and let students sort food items into the right section.
5. Roleplay: At the Restaurant (10 minutes)
Objective: Practice ordering food.
- Teacher (waiter) asks short questions, student (customer) replies in polite expressions:
- “Good evening, how many people?”
“Here’s the menu. What can I get you to drink?
"Our specials this evening are…
"What would you like for your starter?”
“And for your main course?”
“Would you like dessert?"
- “Good evening, how many people?”
