                     Idioms and common phrases for daily use:
 

 1. Hit the books= to study hard to achieve your goal. Examples:
a. I will stay home tonight—I need to hit the books if I want to pass my history exam.
b. Harry has been hitting the books throughout the week to prepare for his university entrance exam.
c. Jennifer decided to postpose her trip and hit the books in order to accelerate her graduation from the law school. 

2. "Go the extra mile":  means to put commitment, dedication and extra effort in order to achieve a goal and give a helping hand to someone.
a. Christofer went the extra mile to help George when he had a serious accident, even though he was unemployed. 
b. Mary didn't hesitate to go the extra mile, when she saw the little girl drowning and saved her in the last minute. 
c. Robert was willing to go the extra mile and donate his kidney and thus saved his mother's life.

3. "A blessing in disguise" – An apparent misfortune that refers to a situation that looks bad at first sight but turns out to be positive with a happy end.
a. George was frustrated for having missed his flight to New York but it turned to be a blessing in disguise when he was informed that his plane crashed a few hours later. 
b. Having lost his job felt like a disaster at that difficult time, but it became a blessing in disguise, since he started a new business that turned to be very successful. 
c. Moving to a new city was very challenging and daunting for the young man, but it was a blessing in disguise because he met amazing new friends who help him come to terms and find a good job.

4. ''Every cloud has a silver lining'' – Even bad situations have some positive aspect.
a. She was disappointed when she didn't get the job, but the silver lining was that she had more time to focus on her passion for writing.
b. John lost his job, but after 6 monthsn, he started a new career as photographer and became very successful.
c. Peter was involved in a car accident on the highway, but in fact, that was how he met his wife.
