USING PICTURES: ENGLISH SPEAKING AND LISTENING
STORY: THE THIEF
TIME: 40 minutes
TARGET GROUP AND OBJECTIVE
This lesson will be useful for you if you can read at high school level or above, and you want to practice speaking English at the level you can read. In this lesson I will help you improve and develop your English speaking skills by encouraging you to think using English while you speak using English. Emphasis is not on perfect grammar but on encouraging you to communicate in English as smoothly as you can. It does not matter if you make mistakes because everybody does when they speak a non-native language. Just do your best to express yourself.
METHOD
Look at the pictures and create the story.
APPROACHES
1) Use the pictures to create a story. 20-30 minutes
a) First, I’ll use the questions, vocabulary etc. under the pictures to help you describe what you see. Identify the objects in the pictures and build a vocabulary list. Discuss the pictures and create the story you see in the pictures. Use your imagination and tell me the story.
I will ask you questions about the pictures and about your story, and then I will help you answer. Working together, we’ll aim to get you telling me the story from start to finish.
Then we can do some more practice asking each other questions about the pictures and the story.
2) Use the pictures to describe the physical world. 10-20 minutes
What do you see in the picture? Describe the shape of the buildings, what the people are wearing, the shape of the windows and all the physical objects. It involves some prepositions but the aim is to get you speaking about what you see and describing the physical world.
Additional pronunciation material if necessary
I use linguistic theory (I did one paper in linguistics for my BA degree), isolating phonemes to contrast minimal pairs, focusing on vowels and diphthongs or consonants and consonant clusters.
