Elementary Chinese course for beginners

This class is the first class of the course in modern standard Chinese (Mandarin or putonghua), and it is designed for students who have no or a very basic Chinese language background. The goals of this course are to set a solid foundation for the four skills of Mandarin Chinese—speaking, listening, reading, and writing—and to develop some understanding of Chinese culture. To accomplish these goals, you are expected by the end of the course:
(1) to master Mandarin Chinese pronunciation and transliteration (the pinyin system), (2) to control a basic vocabulary of approximately 250 words (about 210 characters) and the basic sentence patterns in the textbooks, (3) to interact in Chinese in personal and semi-formal situations (greetings, expressions of politeness, apologies, asking and answering questions, telling dates and time, explaining simple situations, narrating unsophisticated facts, etc.)
